How Condoms Are Tested

All condoms sold in the US undergo rigorous testing to meet FDA requirements for safety. Ultra thin condoms must pass the same tests as standard condoms. There are two main types of tests: air burst tests, and water leak tests. 

Air burst tests are designed to ensure that condoms can withstand a regulation level of air pressure and volume without breaking. To test for this, condoms are filled with air until they pop. The volume and pressure at which they pop is recorded. If the condoms don't withstand the regulation level of air pressure, that means they pose a breakage risk, so they are discarded. 

Water leak tests ensure that condoms will safely contain liquid (which, in practical application, would be sperm) without creating holes or leaks. To test this, condoms are filled with and submerged in saltwater solution. The water-filled condom is squeezed and inspected for leaks. Additionally, an electrode is applied to both the outside and inside of the condom. Rubber latex does not conduct electricity. So, if an electric current is detected between the two, that means there must be a tiny hole or break in the latex, and the condom is discarded. 

In a September 2025 issue of Contraception Magazine, a study comparing natural rubber ultra thin condoms (measuring at under 50 micrometers) to regular condoms (measuring 55 mm and 70 mm) found the ultra thin condoms to be just as effective, "demonstrating that performance in terms of failure rate, slippage, or breakage was not altered by its thinness."

Does Thinner Mean More Breakage?

There's a common misconception that thinner condoms lead to an increased breakage risk. However, that fear is not substantiated by data, as all condoms, regardless of thickness, must pass the same FDA-approved condom testing in order to be sold in the US.

Breakage is actually more commonly caused by user error, improper care and storage, or using condoms that are expired or damaged, according to Dr. Christine Greves, OB/GYN at Orlando Health Hospital. But, the good news is you can easily avoid those risks by following a few simple guidelines.

Here are Greves' tips for proper use to ensure optimal condom safety and effectiveness:

-Check the expiration date on the condoms to ensure they're still good

-Inspect the wrapper to ensure the condom is properly sealed without any tears or openings. When lightly squeezed, there should be a little air bubble to ensure there's no break in the seal

-Make sure condoms have been stored properly in a temperature-controlled environment, kept cool, dry, and away from sunlight. Don't keep them in your wallet or car glove compartment, where they might be subject to excessive heat

-Make sure you select the size condom that properly fits you, to avoid slippage (if the size is too big) or unwanted friction (if too small) 

-Open the condom carefully, without ripping or puncturing (don't use your teeth, and watch out for long nails!)

-When putting on the condom, pinch the tip to allow a small pocket of air and "leave room for the semen" 

-Never use two condoms at a time, which can increase friction that could lead to breakage

-Never use an oil-based lubricant, like cooking oil, vaseline, or lotion. Use only silicone-based or water-based lubricant

Are Ultra Thin Condoms Safe for STI Protection?

Yes, when used properly, ultra thin condoms are more than 90% effective at preventing STIs, according to The Cleveland Clinic–the exact same level as standard condoms, when used properly. 

Latex and synthetic materials block transmission of viruses and bacteria by creating a barrier that prevents skin-to-skin contact or passing of bodily fluids. The thickness of the material does not affect the level of barrier protection or condom effectiveness; if the condom is intact and used properly, any thickness level will provide the same condom safety.

Remember: never use oil-based lubricants with latex condoms. Always store condoms in a dry, cool place, where they aren't subject to sunlight or overheating. Never reuse a condom. Be sure to put the condom on the penis before it touches the vagina, anus or mouth. Roll the condom onto the penis all the way from tip to base. Pinch the tip to leave room for semen. After ejaculating, grip the base of the condom as you exit your partner to ensure the condom doesn't spill or get stuck.
